Innovation in Practice: War Stories and Case Studies
Innovation Seminar

Leading up to the Gala Dinner will be a half day seminar showcasing outstanding innovations drawn from those nominated for a Future Materials Award. We'll look at their innovation, what makes it so special and the winding roads they took to get their product to market. Please note that the speakers are not necessarily Award winners - but they are great companies with great stories.

Where & When

The seminar will be in the Bastille Room at the Sofitel Brisbane and will run from 1:00pm until 5:00pm on the 17th May 2006.

Who & What

Seven speakers from seven companies, each highlighting a different innovation and how they approached the product development and commercialisation.

1:00pmVery Small Particle Company
VSPC's pilot plant manufactures 60 tonnes per year of complex metal oxide nanomaterials and the company is now acknowledged as an international leader in its field. Their method produces a homogeneous product with uniform properties at lower cost than alternative processes.
1:30pmClaypave
By conducting research into the fundamental properties of their clays Claypave was able to develop a method of manufacturing large format clay pavers without cracking and warping and are once again set to take on the concrete and masonary markets.
2:00pm Microwave & Materials Design
M&MD have developed a cutting-edge microwave receive filter for the wireless telecommunications industry using high temperature superconductors. Further advances in porous ceramics have also allowed them to develop a transmit filter which is due out this year.
2:30pm Cleveland Biosensors
The amazing BioFiniti™ Cartridge is the size of a credit card, yet it stores, pumps, meters, mixes, purifies and washes reagents and samples with zero moving parts. It even includes secure on-board waste disposal. All this allows reliable high quality diagnostic testing to be performed by untrained operators in the field.
3:00pm Afternoon Tea Break
3:30pm Bio-Layer
For a given application, Bio-Layer's new platform can develop and test thousands of surface coatings simultaneously, ensuring the best composition for a particular diagnostic test surface which can significantly improve the sensitivity of the immunoassays, increased stability and product shelf life, and lower manufacturing cost.
4:00pm PolyNovo Biomaterials
PolyNovo has developed a new biodegradable polymer that is set to have a big impact on the next generation of medical implants. NovoSorb can be introduced to the body as a fabricated solid or as a liquid which then hardens with the application of light.
4:30pm BSES Limted
BSES has been the first to engineer sugarcane to produce three different types of bioplastic that can one day replace the existing petrochemical-based plastics that are such an environmental problem.
5:00pm Close of Seminar

In the materials industry, the adoption of an appropriate patent strategy can be the difference between success and failure.

This principle applies equally to companies and to academics working in research institutions. The protection of your valuable intellectual property provides you with the opportunity to be rewarded for your research success either directly through commercial exploitation of the research or through royalty payments.

The aim of the Materials group of Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick is to enable you to achieve your goals by using the patent system to produce successful outcomes.

The Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick Materials group is particularly attuned to the needs of materials research and industry. Our team's knowledge has been gained from many years' experience in materials related fields. We have worked with clients to protect innovation in a wide range of industries including the metallurgical, ceramics, plastics, mineral processing, photonics, electronics, nanotechnology, sustainable energy and biomaterials industries.

Phillips Ormonde & Fitzpatrick has offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, and we are able to offer a full range of intellectual property services to clients throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Our client focus is reflected in the firm being awarded the prestigious Best Specialist Firm award in the BRW St.George Client Choice Awards for the second year running.
